The question of a separate Welsh party, independent of the Liberal party, and all other political combinations, is being more and more discussed in the Principality, but as yet it can hardly be said to have grown out of the academic stage. As yet, at any rate, it is possible for a Welshman to declare himself opposed to the idea without forfeiting his character as a good Nationalist. In this article, therefore, I purpose, according to the faith which is in me, to point out what I consider grave objections to the proposal to sever the old historic connection between Wales and the Liberal party. Before I go any further, I wish to make my position perfectly clear. It is not to a Welsh National party, but to an independent Welsh National party that I am opposed. I would have every good Welshman exert himself to the utmost to spread the gospel of Welsh Nationalism, and every representative of Wales in Parliament do all that in him lies to push on the national questions of Wales, and to obtain for them the precedence which they deserve. But, in my humble opinion, the best way to promote Welsh interests in Parliament is to leaven the Liberal party from within, and not to form a Welsh party distinct from, and independent of, that organization.
